The Alchemist book was written by Paulo Coelho, the book specifically describes a boy Santiago who was a shepherd and had a prophetic dream about a hidden treasure in Egypt. Instead of him to forget about the dream, he decided to pursue his dream in searching for his buried treasure. During his searched of his hidden treasure, Santiago grew up and became wise in the ways of the world. Along the way, he met one old king called Melchizedek who came to Santiago the day after his prophetic dream .The king convinced Santiago that he has succeeded in discovering his Personal Legend. The old king tells Santiago that: “following his Personal Legend to its conclusion is a person’s only real obligation in life”. The old king assisted Santiago in making the rightful decisions with his searched for the treasure meanwhile Santiago did not know who that king was but the old king was a god. “And, when you want something, the entire universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” The Alchemist, page 23, by Paulo. Santiago sold his flocks of sheep and headed to Africa to search for his hidden treasure. He got robbed and all his gold and everything that he had been gone in the coursed of his journey. He thought, it was a mistake he followed his dream so he started a job with a crystal merchant company where he got hired.
The merchant man was very kind and fair to Santiago. The merchant’s money began pouring in and the shopkeepers were grateful to Santiago for his good effort and dedication to the work. After almost a year working for the merchant, Santiago made a success of the shop and had plenty of money to do whatever he wanted. As he was walking the streets to go back home one day, he suddenly decided to take a chanced and continued his searched for the buried treasure. Moreover, Santiago met an English man who has spent many years also in searching for his personal legend in caravan across the desert. The English man and Santiago became friends and ended up having a good friendship. They had a good relationship on the way because they had things in common. He also met Fatima on his way of searched for his treasure at the Oasis. She was very beautiful and when Santiago saw her he loved her and Fatima also loved him back. “When you are loved, you can do anything in creation. When you are loved, there’s no need at all to understand what’s happening, because everything happens within you”.
She encouraged Santiago to search for his treasure and waited for him to return. Furthermore Santiago met one more last person who helped him with his searched, the alchemist. The Alchemist was a wizard at the oasis. He is the one who helped Santiago on the second half of his expedition across the desert. He taught Santiago the soul of the world and told him that before he would find his treasure; Santiago would be tested hardest and shows Santiago that it is possible to turn minerals into gold. At the latter part of his searched, he finally reached the pyramid and digger to find the treasure. He encountered another problem. He was surrounded by men who wanted to steal his treasure while digging but they left him after no gold was found. “Every search begins with beginners luck and ends with the victor are being severely tested.” By Paulo Coelho. He wept with happiness because he finally achieved his Personal Legend and saw it through to the ends.
After reading this wonderful book of the Alchemist, it shows me how God works in our lives from Christian perspective. God is the leader who directs our path to our personal legend. Like how the old king helped Santiago make decisions about searching for his hidden treasure, God also is the perfect leader who helps and guides us in life. The book is worthwhile reading because by reading this book, it has thought me more about patient, perseverance and determination in life. I was amazed to see how Santiago was able to make up his mind or determined to pursue his prophetic dream as a boy. It is very difficult in this modern world to just leave everything that you had and follow a dream. Being someone from different country, it would be very difficult to just waked up one day and packing few things that I had or sells all that I had and go back to my country without completing school. If I were to be Santiago I would have so many rationales such as what have I been able to accomplished back home, what if I don’t make it in this life as I leaves in order to follow my dream.
During the searched, he was robbed, beaten, and lost everything but that did not stop him from reaching potential. He diverted from the mission but woke up one day and embarked on his mission again which gives me much courage not to give up in anything that I do or intended to do in this life. The book also talks about some themes and symbols such as love and the Elixir of Life and Philosopher’s Stone. The alchemist labeled love as part of the soul of the world. Love occurs in life and nature, like the alchemist said everything supports each other, they love each other. Santiago told the desert that it showed love for the alchemist’s falcon by offering it game, after which the falcon showed love to man as it offered the game to eat. Santiago also demonstrated that there is love in people. He demonstrated it by loving Fatima for her beauty and also he knew it was part of his personal Legend to love Fatima. “True love is love that allows you to reach your personal legend” (Alchemist). There were symbols in the book; the two alchemy objects were physical representations of the soul of the world, the chief work, which was the result of completely purifying metals. The philosopher’s stone was completely pure and powerful as the soul of the world, had the property of turning metals into gold. The most advanced and purest of all metal. In the book, the Elixir of life did cure all kinds of illnesses and gave immortality. These objects represented the purity in the world, and in people who are trying to reach their personal legend.
